The Birmingham pair are accused of killing Cody, 23, just before midnight on Boxing Day.
Cody — who played for Stratford Town FC — was stabbed on the dancefloor of Crane nightclub in Digbeth, Birmingham.
Carpenter and Gordon were not asked to plead on the murder charge.
But both denied affray before magistrates at the city’s crown court.
