Papas fish and chip restaurant in Hull sees hundreds queuing as award winning chippy sells 10,000 fi

HUNDREDS of people lined out the door to grab a bag of award-winning fish and chips for just 1p.

Papas chippy sold mountains of the stuff - smashing their target of giving away 10,000 portions at the heavily discounted price.

But while the giveaway left the Hull business almost £40,000 out of pocket - the owners said it was all about giving back.

Dino Papas, who owns the fish and chip chain with his dad Sid and brother George, said they simply wanted to thank their community after they were awarded the BBC's best fish and chip shop.

He said: "It's not about the money for us, we are here to give something back and to celebrate being number one."

Hungry customers were willing to wait more than an hour for the meal yesterday - which even sparked a Google alert due to the huge numbers of people searching for the restaurants.

The giveaway was spread across both the Willerby and Bilton sites of the business.

Those waiting were kept entertained with competitions that allowed winners to jump the queue.

As the morning began heating up, co-owner Dino said: "We might need to get some more fish in. This is a true celebration."
